Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kita Billabong?
Kita Billabong is a nonprofit, parent-initiative daycare located in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. Founded in 2002, it draws inspiration from the Berlin children's groups of the 1970s and emphasizes close family–kindergarten collaboration.
Where is the Kita located, and what facilities are available?
The Kita spans approximately 150 m² on the ground floor of a renovated historic building at Greifenhagener Str. 14, 10437 Berlin. It includes a dining room, an open kitchen, a large playroom with a playhouse, a smaller playroom, bathroom, spacious cloakroom, and a communal inner courtyard with a sandpit, garden beds, and an open play area
What ages of children do you welcome, and how many spots are available?
Kita Billabong welcomes children between ages 2 to 6 years old. It maintains a small, close-knit group of up to 21 children to preserve its familial environment. In special cases, children 18+ months are welcome at the kita as well.
What is your pedagogical concept?
We believe children learn best when they can freely explore and experiment in a safe, supportive, and inquisitive environment. Guided by the situational approach, each child’s unique background and interests are embraced, and learning is shaped collaboratively—including through projects initiated by the children themselves.
How does bilingual education work at the Kita?
We practice a language immersion method based on “one person, one language.” Our educational team includes three German-speaking and two native English-speaking teachers, each speaking exclusively their native language with the children. Bilingualism is woven into daily routines, books, songs, and rhymes.
What role do parents play?
As a parent-led initiative, active participation is expected. Parents are invited to contribute through areas like communication, technical support, finances, cleaning, and babysitting. A board of three members and parent officers coordinate organizational roles. This collaborative structure strengthens the quality of care and sustains our vibrant community.
How can I apply or join the Kita?
